The Constituent Assembly of India was formed in 1946 to draft the Constitution of India. It was established under the Cabinet Mission Plan and initially comprised 389 members, which was later reduced to 299 following the Partition. Dr Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar was the Chairman of the Drafting Committee, while Dr Rajendra Prasad served as the President of the Constituent Assembly.
Before adopting the Constitution, the Assembly held a total of 11 sessions over a period of 2 years, 11 months, and 18 days. The Constitution was adopted on 26th November 1949 and came into effect on 26th January 1950, which is now celebrated as Republic Day.
