8. Timeline of Indian Constitution
The timeline of Indian Constitution begins in 1946, when the British government formed the Constituent Assembly to draft a new constitution for India. The Constituent Assembly first met on 9 December 1946, with 299 members representing various regions and communities.
Over the next three years, the Constituent Assembly deliberated on the framework for India's governance, with Dr. B. R. Ambedkar heading the drafting committee.
After detailed deliberations, the final draft of the Constitution was adopted on 26 November 1949. However, it came into effect on 26 January 1950, a date chosen to honour the 1930 Purna Swaraj (complete independence) declaration. 26 January was celebrated as Republic Day, marking the establishment of India as a democratic republic. The Constitution provided a comprehensive legal framework, guaranteeing fundamental rights and establishing the principles of justice, equality, and democracy. It has been amended several times according to the changing needs of the country.
