The Indian Constituent Assembly was formed in 1946 with the prime objective of framing a constitution for independent India. It was an important institution that played a key role in shaping India's democratic framework. The Constituent Assembly had 299 members, representing various provinces, communities, and political parties, thereby incorporating diverse viewpoints in the constitution-making process. It included prominent leaders like Pt. Nehru, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.
The Constituent Assembly first met in December 1946, and its deliberations lasted for about three years. It produced a constitution that reflected the values of justice, equality, liberty, and fraternity.
On 26 November 1949, the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution, which came into force on 26 January 1950, establishing India as a republic and laying the foundation for its democratic governance.
