7.1. Drafting Committee

The Drafting Committee of the Indian Constitution was formed in 1947 under the chairmanship of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, often referred to as the chief architect of the Constitution. The committee was entrusted with the task of transforming the principles of the Constitution discussed in the Constituent Assembly into a detailed and legal framework. The seven-member committee comprised prominent leaders such as Pt. Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Alladi Krishnaswamy Iyer, and the committee worked for several months with precision.
The main role of the committee was to draft the Constitution, including provisions for fundamental rights, governance, justice, and distribution of power between the central government and the states. After reviewing the draft, the committee made amendments and refined the document to reflect India's diverse society and democratic aspirations.
The Drafting Committee presented the final version to the Constituent Assembly in November 1949, and it became a cornerstone for the establishment of the Republic of India in 1950.
