Democracy is the fundamental principle of the Indian Constitution, which ensures that India remains a republic where power lies in the hands of the people. The Constitution, adopted on 26 November 1949, creates a system in which citizens choose their leaders through free and fair elections, thereby promoting participation, accountability and transparency. It guarantees fundamental rights such as equality, freedom of expression and the right to a fair hearing, which are essential for an effective democracy.
The members of the Constituent Assembly, which included Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, Pt. Nehru, Sardar Patel and other prominent leaders, played a key role in shaping the Constitution. They understood that the democratic system would ensure justice and unity in a diverse country. From their perspective, the Constitution became the basis for protecting the rights of citizens, providing equal opportunities and making the government accountable to the people. Their efforts laid the foundation for a strong and inclusive democracy.
