7.3. Handover

The Indian Constitution was formally handed over to the nation on 26 November 1949, when the Constituent Assembly adopted the final draft. This event followed more than three years of deliberation, debate and amendment by the Constituent Assembly and the Drafting Committee, chaired by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the President of the Constituent Assembly, formally accepted the document, symbolizing the transfer of power from British colonial rule to the new, sovereign republic of India.
Although the Constitution was adopted in 1949, it came into effect on 26 January 1950, which coincided with the day of the declaration of Purna Swaraj (complete independence) in 1930. This date was chosen to honor India's freedom struggle.
India formally became a republic on 26 January 1950, and the Constitution provided the basis for its democracy, justice and governance. This event was the beginning of India's journey as an independent and democratic nation.
