7.2. "Oath Taking"
When the Indian Constitution was adopted on 26 November 1949, Jawaharlal Nehru, along with other members of the Constituent Assembly, took an oath to uphold the Constitution and its values. Nehru, who was the first Prime Minister of India, was playing a key role in drafting the Constitution and ensuring that it was in line with democratic principles like justice, equality and liberty. Along with him, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr. Rajendra Prasad and other prominent leaders who worked tirelessly to create the Constitution were also realizing their responsibility by taking the oath.
This oath was a pledge to protect the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India, and to ensure that the Constitution would guide the country towards democracy, progress and inclusiveness. It was a symbol of their dedication to building a republic that would be based on the principles of equality and justice and protect the rights and welfare of every citizen.
