5.4. Ashoka's Dhamma

- Emperor Ashoka (268–232 BCE) and his Dhamma Emperor Ashoka was inspired by Buddhist values and promoted public welfare, ethical governance and non-violence.
- He erected edicts across his empire, which enshrined democratic ideals such as religious tolerance and public participation.
