5.3. Vajji Sangha and Mahajanapadas

Ancient Republics (Mahajanapadas)

Period: 6th century BCE Ancient India had several republican states or mahajanapadas, such as the Vajji Sangha, the Sakyas, and the Licchavi.
Vajji Sangha:
- It was located in the area of modern Bihar and functioned under the republican system. Decisions were taken in assemblies, where representatives discussed and reached decisions by consensus.
- Evidence: These assemblies are mentioned in the Buddhist text Mahaparinibbana Sutta, where Gautama Buddha praises their democratic traditions.
- Quote: "As long as the Vajjis hold regular and full assemblies, they will prosper."
