4.7. Indian Constitution and its Vedic Tradition

Equality and Social Justice
Vedic Context: Though the later varna system became rigid over time, the early Vedic age emphasised on equality and collective development. Women like Gargi and Maitreyi participated in intellectual debates, which reflected gender equality.
Constitutional Provisions:
- Article 14: Equality before law.
- Article 15: Prohibition of discrimination on the basis of caste, religion or sex.
- Article 17: Abolition of untouchability — This provision is consistent with the principle of social justice inherent in the concept of Vedic religion.
